Call (928) 766-1925The moment repiping becomes the cheaper option
Nobody repipes a house because a plumber suggested it. It becomes the right answer when the arithmetic changes: when repeated repairs, the drywall and tile work behind them, and the disruption of not knowing where the next one lands, add up to more than doing it once.
The clearest signal is a cluster. One pinhole in a copper line is an event. Three in eighteen months across different parts of the house means the material has reached the end of its service life in these water conditions, and the next one is already forming somewhere you have not looked.
The second signal is material. Grey polybutylene, used on some builds through the late 1970s to the mid 1990s, has a well-documented history of fitting failures that give no warning at all. If that is what is in your walls, replacement is a planning decision rather than an emergency one, and planning it is much cheaper than reacting to it.
What is likely behind your walls, by build era
Housing around the valley went up in distinct waves, and each wave used what was standard at the time. This is the pattern we find.
| Era | Likely material | How it fails here |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-1970 homestead and ranch | Galvanised steel, some early copper | Internal corrosion narrowing the bore; flow drops before anything leaks |
| 1970s to mid 1990s | Copper, polybutylene on some builds | Pinholes in copper; polybutylene fittings failing without warning |
| Mid 1990s to mid 2000s | Copper and early CPVC | Scale narrowing the hot side; CPVC becoming brittle at hot outlets |
| Mid 2000s onward | PEX, trunk and branch or manifold | Rarely fails from water chemistry; freeze splits in unheated runs instead |
Age alone is not a reason to repipe. Sound copper in a house with treated water can run for decades more. The combination of age, material and repeat failures is what makes the case.
How a repipe is actually carried out
Plan the routes
New runs are planned through accessible space wherever possible: attic, walls, crawl space. Openings are made deliberately at planned points rather than chased along the old route.
Run new pipe and connect in stages
The house keeps water for most of the work. A typical single-family repipe involves one or two short shutdown periods, not a week without water.
Test, inspect, make good
Pressure test, then inspection under the codes the town has adopted, then drywall repair and finishing. Ask up front who does the making good, because it is a real part of the cost.
Questions that change a repipe quote
Ask all six before you compare prices
Two quotes for a repipe can differ enormously and both be honest. These are usually the reasons why.
- Does the price include drywall repair, texture and paint, or does it stop at working pipe?
- Is the whole house included, including outbuildings, the well house and outside taps?
- What material is proposed, and why that one for this water?
- Are new shutoff valves and a main shutoff included, or reused?
- Who pulls the permit and books the inspection?
- How many days will the house be without water, and at which points?
A house on a private well has one extra question worth asking: is the run from the well house to the building included, since that section is often the oldest and the most exposed on the property.
Repipe and water treatment are one decision
Do not put new pipe in the same conditions
If mineral-heavy water contributed to the failure of the old system, and on groundwater this rich in calcium and bicarbonate it usually did, then installing new pipe without addressing the water repeats the experiment with a longer timeline.
PEX is considerably more tolerant of aggressive water chemistry than copper, which is part of why it dominates modern installations here. It is not immune to scale in the hot lines and at fixtures, and the appliances at the ends of those pipes certainly are not.
The efficient time to fit treatment is while the system is already open, and the same visit is the right moment to replace a water heater that is near the end of its life. Doing all three separately costs more in labour than doing them together.
Third leak in a year? Ask for the repair price and the repipe price side by side before deciding.
GET BOTH NUMBERS(928) 766-1925Repiping questions from Chino Valley homeowners
How long does a repipe take?
For a typical single-family house, two to four days for the pipe work, plus drywall repair and finishing afterward. Larger homes, multiple bathrooms and outbuildings extend that.
You will not be without water for the whole period. Expect one or two planned shutdowns rather than continuous disruption.
Do I have to move out?
Almost never. Most households stay in place. It is dusty and noisy work in the areas being opened, and having the plumbers work room by room is normal.
Copper or PEX?
For most houses here, PEX. It handles this water chemistry better, it tolerates freezing considerably better than rigid pipe, and it needs far fewer openings to install because it flexes around structure.
Copper remains a legitimate choice where it suits the property or the owner's preference, and we will price either honestly.
Can it be done in stages?
Yes, and on a tight budget that can be sensible: the hot lines first, or one wing at a time. The trade-off is more total labour than doing it once and more disruption spread out.
Discuss it as a plan rather than doing half and hoping.
Does it need a permit?
Yes. Repiping is exactly the sort of work the Town of Chino Valley's expedited plumbing permit path is designed for, and it is inspected under the adopted 2024 plumbing code. County requirements apply outside the town limits.
Ask to see the permit. It also matters when you sell the house.
Will it increase my water pressure?
If the old pipe had corroded or scaled internally, yes, often noticeably. If the pressure problem is at the source, a failing pressure tank or a tired pump on a well, new pipe will not change it.
Worth diagnosing which before spending, and a proper look at the system answers that in an hour.
