Why we will not quote you a hardness number over the phone

Properties around Chino Valley draw from several different sources. Some subdivisions are on Town of Chino Valley water, some on City of Prescott water, some on small private systems, and a great deal of the surrounding acreage is on private wells at varying depths into different parts of the aquifer.

USGS sampling in the Big Chino subbasin between 2011 and 2018 found meaningful chemical differences between the basin-fill and carbonate aquifers, with the carbonate samples running higher in calcium, sodium, bicarbonate, fluoride and arsenic. Two wells a mile apart can genuinely be different water.

So a single number for the valley would be misleading. A water test costs very little, takes days rather than weeks, and turns equipment selection from a guess into a calculation. That is the honest starting point, and it is the same advice we would give if you bought the equipment elsewhere.

What to test for on a private well here

One test, several answers

A softener addresses hardness. It does not address several other things worth knowing about, which is why the test list is longer than one item.

  • Total hardness, in grains per gallon or mg/L as calcium carbonate, which sets the softener size.
  • Iron and manganese, which foul softener resin and need separate handling if present.
  • Arsenic, which USGS work found above the EPA drinking water standard in most carbonate aquifer samples in this subbasin. A softener does not remove it.
  • Total dissolved solids and pH, which affect corrosion as well as taste.
  • Bacteria, which matters on any private well and especially after work has been done on the wellhead.
  • Nitrate, particularly on parcels with historic agricultural use or nearby septic systems.

A softener is the right answer to hardness and the wrong answer to most of the rest. Anyone selling one as a solution to all six is not being straight with you.

The common sensible arrangement here is a sediment filter and softener for the whole house, plus reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap for drinking water. That combination is chosen from a test result, not from a brochure.

Softeners and septic systems: the discharge question

Where the backwash goes

A softener regenerates by flushing brine, and that discharge has to go somewhere. On a septic property this is a real design question rather than a detail: the additional volume and salt loading are not what most tanks and fields were sized for.

Practical options include a demand-initiated unit that regenerates only when capacity is used rather than on a timer, potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride, or a separate discharge arrangement where site conditions and the county's requirements allow it. Which of those applies depends on your system and your parcel.

Yavapai County holds the permit records for on-site wastewater systems in the unincorporated areas, so if you do not know what is buried out there, that is where the answer lives. It is worth having before adding load to it.

Installing and servicing units properly

A good installation includes a full bypass so the house keeps running when the unit is serviced, a hard water tap left unsoftened for outdoor use and livestock, and enough clearance to get a resin tank out without dismantling half a utility room.

Servicing an existing unit is often the cheaper conversation. Resin beds do wear, valves stick, and brine tanks bridge with a salt crust that stops regeneration entirely while the unit looks like it is working. A softener that has quietly stopped softening for a year is common, and it is usually a repair rather than a replacement.

Treating the water protects everything downstream: the water heater, the tankless unit if you have one, and every cartridge faucet in the house.

How hard is the water in Chino Valley?

It varies, and that is not evasion. Different subdivisions are on different supplies, and private wells draw from different depths in an aquifer system with documented chemical variation between its basin-fill and carbonate parts.

Will a softener remove arsenic?

No. Ion exchange softening addresses hardness minerals, not arsenic. USGS sampling in this subbasin found arsenic above the EPA standard in most carbonate aquifer samples, so on a private well this is worth testing for specifically.

If arsenic is present, treatment options exist and they are separate equipment. Anyone telling you the softener handles it is mistaken.

Is softened water safe to drink?

Ion exchange trades hardness minerals for a small amount of sodium, which matters mainly to people on strictly sodium-restricted diets. Potassium chloride is the usual alternative.

Many households soften the whole house and use reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap for drinking and cooking, which sidesteps the question entirely.

How much salt should a unit use?

It depends on hardness, household water use and whether the unit regenerates on demand or on a timer. A demand-initiated unit uses noticeably less salt and water than a timer model in most households.

If your salt use has jumped without a change in habits, the unit needs checking rather than more salt.

My softener seems to have stopped working. Is it dead?

Usually not. Salt bridging in the brine tank, a stuck valve, or a control head that has lost its settings after a power cut are all common and all repairable.

Resin does eventually wear out, particularly where iron has fouled it, but that is worth confirming rather than assuming.

Do I need a permit to install one?

The installation itself is plumbing work under the codes the Town of Chino Valley has adopted, currently including the 2024 International Plumbing Code, and the discharge arrangement is the part that needs thought on a septic property.

Outside the town limits, county requirements apply. Either way it is worth the installer confirming the discharge plan before the unit arrives.
