Those systems suit the climate well. Winter here is not severe by mountain standards, with January normals near a 52F high over a 21F low, but the swing is large and the nights are long, and radiant heat holds a building through that pattern better than air does.
The catch is that hydronic systems tolerate neglect until the coldest week of the year, then stop. Almost every emergency boiler call is a service item that was visible in October.

An autumn checklist for hydronic systems
Do this in October, not December
Every item here is cheaper as maintenance than as an emergency call on the first freezing night.
- Fire the system up for an hour in early autumn and listen to it, well before you need it.
- Check the system pressure cold against the manufacturer's stated figure.
- Bleed radiators and high points until air stops coming out.
- Check the antifreeze concentration if the system is glycol filled, particularly in outbuildings that may sit unheated.
- Look at the expansion vessel and the pressure relief discharge for signs of weeping.
- Confirm your propane level and delivery schedule now rather than on a holiday weekend.
Radiant loops in slab, and this valley's ground

In-floor radiant embedded in a slab is comfortable, efficient and effectively unserviceable in place. Locally that raises the same issue as any buried line here: soil in the Chino Valley area is shallow, roughly two feet on average over caliche, so what sits below a slab stays wet once it gets wet.
Two practical consequences follow. Keep the loop's water quality and pressure under control, because scale and corrosion in an embedded loop cannot be rectified later. And take a slow pressure loss seriously rather than topping the system up each month, since that is exactly how a small loop leak becomes a slab leak with heating attached.
If a loop is confirmed leaking, the options are the same as for a domestic line: repair at the point of failure, or abandon and reroute the affected zone.

Should I service a boiler every year even if it works?
Yes, and autumn is the right time. Annual servicing on a combustion appliance is about safety as much as reliability, and the failures that strand people in January are almost always visible three months earlier.
A system in a shop or barn that runs seasonally deserves the same attention before it is switched back on.
My system loses pressure and I keep topping it up. Is that normal?
No. A sealed system should hold pressure. Repeated topping up means water is leaving somewhere, and every refill introduces fresh mineral-laden water that scales the heat exchanger.
On this groundwater that second effect is significant, so a slow leak damages the boiler as well as wasting water.
Can a boiler heat my domestic hot water as well?
Combination and indirect arrangements do exactly that and are common where propane is the only fuel available. Whether it suits your household depends on simultaneous demand and on how far the taps are from the plant.
For most homes here a separate water heater is simpler and easier to service, and that is worth weighing honestly.
Do you work on outbuilding and shop heaters?
Yes. Unit heaters and small hydronic loops in shops, barns and garages are common on acreage, and they tend to be neglected precisely because nobody lives in the building.
Freeze protection is the main issue there, since an unheated shop at this elevation will drop below freezing many nights each winter.
Is propane a problem for boilers?
Not at all, it is the normal fuel out here where there is no gas main. The requirements differ from natural gas in orifice sizing and supply pressure, so the technician needs to know which fuel before arriving.
Keeping an eye on tank level ahead of a cold snap is the practical piece that catches people out.
