What a sewer camera actually shows you

The inspection is the cheapest part of any sewer job. It is also the part most often skipped, which is how people end up paying for the same clearing three times.

The difference between clearing a line and understanding it

Cabling a blocked line is a mechanical process. A cutting head goes down the pipe, meets the obstruction, breaks through it, and drainage returns. It works, it is quick, and for a one-off blockage caused by something that should not have gone down there, it is the correct and complete answer.

What it does not tell you is why the line blocked. If a root has grown through a joint, cabling cuts the root and leaves the joint. If a section has sagged and is holding water, cabling clears the accumulated solids and leaves the sag. If the pipe has partially collapsed, cabling reopens a channel through the debris and leaves the collapse. In each case drainage returns, everyone is satisfied, and the same call comes in a few months later.

A camera turns that guesswork into a picture. You see the actual condition of the line, the location of the fault, and its distance from the access point, which is the difference between an informed decision and an expensive one.

What the footage typically reveals

These are the findings that come up most often, and what each one means for the repair.

Only two rows there are genuinely solved by cabling alone. That ratio is the argument for the camera.

The local complication: what is underneath

Excavation here is not cheap, which raises the stakes

University of Arizona Extension's soil survey work describes Chino Valley soils as roughly two feet deep over a semi-impervious caliche layer, with the Big Chino area to the north running deeper at around four to six feet of sandy to clay loam. Much of the Paulden area sits over basalt.

That geology means excavation is genuinely expensive here, and it means the penalty for digging in the wrong place is high. A camera gives a measured distance from the access point to the fault, which is what turns a trench into a targeted excavation rather than an exploratory one.

It also feeds the repair choice. Where a line can be lined or spot-repaired rather than dug up along its length, the saving is substantial, and knowing which is possible requires seeing the pipe. That decision is covered in more detail on the sewer line repair page.

When an inspection is clearly worth doing

Six situations where we would recommend it

We do not think every slow drain needs a camera. These are the cases where it pays for itself reliably.

  • The same blockage has been cleared more than twice in a year. Something structural is causing that pattern.
  • You are buying the property. A pre-purchase inspection of the main line is one of the highest-value checks available and is rarely included as standard.
  • Mature trees sit anywhere near the line's route. Root intrusion is gradual and entirely invisible until it is not.
  • The house predates modern materials, or you do not know what the line is made of. Clay and cast iron behave very differently from PVC.
  • Excavation is being discussed. Digging without a measured location is how a single trench becomes three.
  • You are on septic and want to establish whether the problem is the line or the tank before booking either.

Conversely, a first-time blockage in a modern line with an obvious cause does not need one. Clearing it and seeing whether it returns is a reasonable and cheaper approach.

What to ask for, and what to keep

Ask for the footage, or at least stills of anything significant, along with the distance measurements. That record is worth keeping. It gives you a baseline to compare against if the problem recurs, it is useful evidence if a repair is disputed, and it is genuinely valuable when you sell.

Ask what the pipe material is and roughly how old it appears. Those two facts shape every future decision about the line, and they are usually clearly visible on the footage.

If a repair is recommended, ask specifically why the fault cannot be managed another way, and what happens if you defer it. A structural collapse and a grease coating are both findings, but only one of them gets worse on its own.

Questions about camera inspections

Can you camera a line that is currently blocked?

Usually the blockage has to be relieved first, because the camera needs a path and cannot see through standing water and solids. So the normal sequence is clear the line, then inspect it.

That order is also more informative, because you see the pipe's actual condition rather than the debris sitting in it.

Does it work on a septic system?

Yes, for the line from the house to the tank, which is where a meaningful share of septic-property blockages actually are. The tank and drainfield are assessed differently.

Establishing which side of the tank inlet the problem sits on is often the single most useful outcome of the visit.

How accurate is the location it gives?

Distance from the access point is measured on the cable and is reliable. Position on the surface is established with a locator following the camera head, and is accurate enough to dig to.

Combined, they are the difference between a trench and a search.

Should I get one before buying a house here?

It is worth serious consideration, particularly on an older property, one with mature trees, or one on septic where records are missing. Standard inspections generally do not include the buried line.

A fault found before purchase is a negotiating position. The same fault found afterward is just an expense.
